Actual good advice: ask the players not only what the characters are looking for, but what they actually want to find. The cleric in my game is looking for a library and I know there's no library here, so I asked his player what he WANTED, which was a source of knowledge about this one weird thing. And THAT is something that can easily exist, but that I hadn't thought to put in (it's there NOW though).
